Dress Inspiration

[jcrew image in the middle]
Ding, ding, ding! Some of you guessed it, I fell in the love with the Jcrew Daphne wedding gown. But of course, it was discontinued by the time I was ready to buy. Thank goodness though, we ended up creating a significantly less expensive version.
Using the Daphne gown as inspiration, my mom pieced together patterns to create a dress that perfectly fit my body. I opted to use a sheer overlay as the top layer of the dress with a large floral print ... followed by a layer of taffeta for body, and then an attached slip with a cute netted edging. My mom doubled up the patterned fabric on the neck and puffy-sleeves so they were completely sheer yet sturdy. We attached a satin belt to break up the dress ... that snapped in the back with pearl buttons.

I am very happy that we could not get our hands on the Jcrew dress, the process of actually making the dress from scratch allowed me the opportunity to decide on every detail from the buttons to the lining. I highly recommend creating your own dress if you have the resources. For me it was very cost effective and became one of the most special wedding projects that I will never forget.

Your dress is beautiful. I love the original, but I agree that making your own is so much better!

Your dress is amazing! It is so neat that you and your mom made it! I love it and it's so much more special than the J.Crew one.

Where did you find the white on white sheer print cloth?

March 12, 2009 | Unregistered Commenternicole

I actually found it at this fabric store (largest in the southeast) called Mary Jo's (in Gastonia, NC) -- they had a nice bridal selection but i found this particular fabric in the drapery section.

I agree - your dress is actually BETTER than the Daphne dress itself! Your mother did an AMAZING job!
I too wish to have a dress like the Daphne dress for my wedding - however I am having trouble getting the dress patterns.... any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks ;o)

Hi Tabitha,

I too am trying to make something similar. One pattern that is close is Vogue 2979. There are some changes that need to be made, but the bodice is similar.

Cheers,
-Laura

Hi! I absolutely love your dress and am am trying to create my own version of the Daphne. However, finding a suitable fabric is becoming quite a burden - what kind of material did you end up using for the overlay? I've been looking for embroidered silk organzas, but I can't find anything with a large print. I would appreciate any advice you can give! :)

Thanks!

Hi -- I'm another soon-to-be bride attempting to recreate the Daphne based off of that Vogue pattern. I'm sorry to use this page as a forum for discussing, but I couldn't contact any of the commenters directly.

I'm looking for any advice you all may have on converting this pattern to more closely resemble the Daphne dress. There are some obvious changes to be made (raising the waist, etc.), but since you are all presumably going through the same thing, any advice would be greatly appreciated. My email is included in this comment.

Thanks!!!

This was my dream wedding dress. Unfortunately, I never thought of having it recreated and ended up wearing a dress I have second thoughts about. Yours looks like it was absolutely beautiful.

The Daphne dress is just beautiful on you! I don't undertand why J Crew discontinued. It seems like there are a whole lot of brides out there who love the style! My daughter-in-law to be is one of them. She showed me the dress and told me how much she liked it. I would very much like to help her have this dress. Would it be possible for you to find out from your Mom which patterns she put together to duplicate it? I would really like to make it for her!

Thank you!
Susan

What pattern numbers did you use?

May 4, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKathy

If you do know the patterns she used, I'm sure we would all like to know. She could make a killing selling the pattern online to brides who want to dress so bad they'll get it handmade. If you do know the patterns or if she is selling it let me know too please!

I also used the daphne dress as an inspiration for my wedding dress, my friend sewed it, and my grandma crocheted the collar.
Fortunatelly I found a georgeous pattern fabric for it...
It was perfect for me, I loved it, simple, classic and elegant!

Good Morning!

I just came across your blog and consider it such a blessing! I am working on recreating this dress with a friend and was wondering if you could tell me which patterns you used for your recreation or if your mother made her own if I could get a copy of it??? It would mean so very much to me! And thank you for the information on where to find the fabric! Really such a blessing!! Any help would be so greatly appreciated!
