So long Savannah...
Tuesday, November 10, 2009
Savannah it's been swell, but we're moving north. In January, the hub and I are packing up our things again and moving back to NYC. That's something I've wanted to say for months, but now that things have fallen in place and are official, I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders.
I came to Savannah to pursue photography and I'm heading to New York to pursue fashion. When I decided last January it would be a resolution of mine to learn to sew better, I had no idea where it would take me. So alongside studying photography at school, I banged on the sewing machine at night and quickly realized I had a passion. The work I've done as photographer and as a graphic designer never fully satisfied my desire to create, what I long for is the tangible -- to transform and create with materials and with my hands. Long story short, I'm headed to Parsons The New School for Design to pursue fashion design.
I've already heard this from family and I know it's a question I'll continue to get, "I thought you wanted to do photography" and the answer is of course I still do! I have many loves and many ways I like to create. I love to take photos and I love the places our little photography business has taken us. Is it so crazy so say I want to do both?
So that's my story. No time like the present. We're completely thrilled and terrified to move back to the city. And we would love for a magical apartment fairy to come show us the apartment of our dreams at an even more amazing price, ha :) In all seriousness, I welcome any apartment hunting tips from NYC dwellers or any other advice you'd like to send my way. We're heading up to scope out the city during the week of Thanksgiving. Our move will be here before we know it and of course I'll share the journey here, with all of you :)

congratulations, whitney! can't wait to see what nyc will bring. i've been dreaming of a move there myself... and how exciting that you will be at parsons!
yay!!! That is so exciting! I am so proud of people when they follow their passions and dreams!! And now you will be close to me- (well sort of) I see a meet up in our future!
That's so exciting Whitney!! NYC will LOVE to have you back. Right now I live in Fort Greene, Brooklyn which is only a 15 minute train ride from the city. I don't know if you had Brooklyn in mind but if you do I can certainly help you out with any questions.
whoa girl! as I always say, "when Whitney wants something, she makes it happen!" So keep making it happen!!!! Please post if Project Runway gets back to NYC and you see any of them working there ;) Keep us posted on your adventures... YOU WILL BE AWESOME! And the South will miss you....
Congrats on this new adventure!
Congrats on your big decision! Way to take the bull by the horns ;)
Good luck with the apartment hunt, I'm sure your blog readers will come through with a perfect (and inexpensive) flat just for you!
all the best :)
Congratulations :)
Congratulations -- I think having all of those passions: graphic design, fashion, photography, etc is all completely normal for us creative people. It's passion for creativity! Good luck! Your fashion designs and sewing are beautiful!
Congratulations, Whitney! And no, it's not crazy to want to do both. I have a bachelor's degree in architecture, an MBA with a concentration in marketing, I work for a letterpress company, and along with all of those things in life all I want to do is write a novel, get a degree in photography, blog until my fingers fall off and plan pretty weddings and parties. It's ok to want to do it all....or so I tell myself. ;-)
congrats and good for you for doing what you really love -- not easy to make that big step! you have such a great eye for fashion .... i'm very much looking forward to seeing what you do next -have no doubt it will be amazing. xx
Congratulations, that's so exciting!
Oh, how exciting! Good luck to you!
Mazel tov! New York is amazing, heartbreaking, awesome, and just wonderful. I can't wait to see what you create! I've heard Parsons is very intense, so when things are looking rougher than usual, remember all of your readers who believe in you and are rooting for you.
OK, enough cheesiness out of me. Thompkins Square Park in the East Village will be perfect for your pup to make friends-they have a great little dog park there.
I so envy you! You have new adventures everyday! This is the best way to live, pursue any dream! It's amazing, you can do anything in the world that you want, and YOU'RE doing it! Parsons!!! That is going to be the greatest thing ever. The opportunities in NYC are endless! Congratulations.
how exciting! I feel the same, I have so many creative interests, it's hard to focus on just one. you definitely inspire me to try out new things!
Congratulations! I can't wait to see what the city inspires you to create. In regards to apartment hunting, have you looked into any places in Long Island City? A lot of my friends who used to live in Brooklyn moved out there because of cheaper rent and nicer apartments. It's also not too long of a commute to get into Manhattan (only one stop usually) and that part of Queens is really developing. Good luck on finding a place!
Congratulations on the move! I miss NYC so much sometimes -- you're so very lucky. I think what you're doing is absolutely fantastic. My family has often questioned the changes in my path (from actress to physicist to philosopher to whatever else the future may hold). It's really good to be passionate and not to think that we have to restrict that passion to one thing. I can't wait to see where it takes you!!
Awesome! You're really an inspiration for following dreams! Have fun and good luck!
Go for it! Sounds like your photography skills will complement a career in fashion. Can't wait to hear more about the school too.
We'll be so lucky to have you here in NYC:) Best of luck!! Moving is such a pain, I'll send you happy moving vibes.
I have to tell you, I am so inspired by the way you pursue your creative dreams and passions, I wish I had your courage! NYC will be great, best of luck to you and your family!
Wow!!! What a surprise - and how exciting for you two! Best of luck and I can't wait to see what's in store for y'all. (Had to drop a "y'all" in there since you're heading away from the land of Southern drawls!)
http://ncsuemme.blogspot.com/ is a friend of mine from undergrad - Emily, from Textiles. She's now living in NYC and would probably be a great resource :-)
wow! how awesome... and inspiring! yay for grabbing life by the horns. :)
